Dental Cleanings

Regular or recommended dental cleanings are an essential part of maintaining good oral health. They help prevent gum disease, cavities, and other dental problems while keeping your teeth clean and refreshed.

Why Are Professional Cleanings Important?

Professional cleaning appointments are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health and hygiene. Based on your new patient exam or reactivation appointment, we determine the best hygiene interval and therapy for your overall oral health.

Even the best daily brushing and flossing won’t remove every bit of plaque and biofilm from your teeth and gumline. Plaque eventually hardens into tartar, which only professional cleaning can remove. Some patients also have pocketing, which cannot be reached with a toothbrush or floss.

Other benefits of regular cleanings include:

  • Prevention of gum disease
  • Early detection of dental issues
  • Fresher breath
  • Enhanced appearance of teeth
  • Decreased risk of cavities
  • Prevention of tooth loss
  • Professional guidance on oral care techniques
  • Overall improvement in systemic health

How Often Should I Schedule a Cleaning?

Generally, patients should schedule professional cleaning appointments twice a year. Patients developing gum (periodontal) disease may need more frequent cleanings. If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, we recommend treatment at least every three to four months for your routine care.

Patients with risk factors for developing gum disease may need more frequent cleanings. Those with diabetes also often require as many as four cleanings per year to fight against the attendant oral health difficulties.

What to Expect

During a dental cleaning, our hygienist will visually examine your mouth, gums, and teeth. They will polish and floss your teeth using a paste and polisher to remove soft plaque before removing tartar through scaling. Digital images (x-rays or photos) will also be taken by our hygienist or hygiene assistant.

Typically, we recommend once a year for your dental x-rays unless we are monitoring certain areas or if a dental issue arises. Oral ID is also available to screen for any signs of oral cancer; we recommend this treatment at least once a year for our patients. Optional fluoride treatment may be applied at the end of your cleaning to strengthen your tooth enamel.

We may provide oral hygiene instructions and conduct a final examination afterward, recommending any necessary treatments.

Enhanced Precision with Advanced Technology

We utilize cutting-edge technologies during our dental cleanings. The Cavitron and Piezo handpiece uses ultrasonic vibrations to gently remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth and along the gumline. This process allows us to perform professional cleanings with enhanced precision and effectiveness while minimizing discomfort and sensitivity for a comfortable cleaning experience.
